When we opened Petals of Hope Girls Academy, the goal was simple: give girls in Liberia access to a safe, quality education. In those early years, "simple" was the right word. Small classrooms. A small number of students. Room to breathe.
That didn't last long.
Enrollment grew faster than anyone expected. What started as a handful of students became dozens, then over 160. We were grateful - this was exactly what we'd hoped for. But it also meant we were running out of room. Fast.
Teachers were doubling up in spaces not designed for two classes at once. Younger students and older students were sharing areas that couldn't really serve either group well. The problem wasn't passion or commitment - it was square footage.
We began talking seriously about expanding the building. What would it take to add a proper high school structure? Could we do it without pulling resources away from the students already enrolled?
The answer came from our supporters.
Donors began giving specifically toward the new building. Construction started on a new multi-story structure on our campus. The first floor is now complete and in use - students are in those classrooms right now. But there's still more to finish.
The second floor needs to be built. Additional classrooms are planned. The work is real, and so are the costs.
Every dollar given to the Build the Future campaign goes directly toward completing what's already underway. We're not starting from scratch - we're finishing something that's already changing lives. And the students who will fill those classrooms when construction is complete are already out there, waiting for a school that has room for them.
